Etymology

From the plural χείλη of χείλος (cheílos) with a suffix -α > χείλια in analogy to plurals such as στήθη (stíthi) - στήθια (stíthia, “breasts”).[2]

Or from a medieval Byzantine Greek χείλιν or ἀχείλιν with resyllabizing the phrase ένα αχείλι (“one lip”) to ένα χείλι.[3]
