From Alanic *äväg, from *abga, from Proto-Iranian *Hā́pākaH (“water-like”), from *Hā́fš (“water”); compare Persian آب (āb, “water”), آبگینه (ābgīna, “glass”). Related to Old Armenian ապակի (apaki) and Hungarian üveg.
