Inherited from Proto-Slavic *věra, from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁ros (“true”). Cognate with Old Church Slavonic вѣра (věra), Ukrainian ві́ра (víra), Bulgarian вя́ра (vjára), Slovene vẹ́ra (tonal orthography), Polish wiara. The Indo-European root is also the source of Latin vērus and German wahr.
