Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish كاور (gâvur), from Persian گاور (gâvor), گبر (gabr), from Aramaic גַּבְרָא (gaḇrā, “man”), from earlier Imperial Aramaic 𐡂𐡁𐡓𐡀 (gbrʾ), ultimately from Proto-Semitic *gabr-.
Replaced earler (attested since 15th century) гаур (gaur) in 18th century, possibly under influence of Western European languages.
