From Middle Ukrainian журавлин (žuravlyn, crane), журавлинъ (žuravlynʺ, crane), журавлиное (žuravlynoe, crane), журавовъ (žuravovʺ, crane), from Old East Slavic жеравие (žeravie), жеравець (žeravecĭ), жеравлины (žeravliny), жералины (žeraliny), жеравлиныя (žeravlinyja), жералиныя (žeralinyja), from Proto-Slavic *žeravjь, from Proto-Indo-European *gerh₂- (to call hoarsely). *žeravъ is also interpreted as the fusion of Proto-Indo-European *ger-, *gera- (crane) and *awis, *h₂éwis (bird).
