Etymology

From Proto-Mongolic *jexeren, commonly derived from Proto-Turkic *yẹgren (yellow, chestnut), which is also the source of зээрд (zeerd, red, chestnut).

Compare East Yugur jeeren, Western Yugur [script needed] (yiğïr, gazelle), Chuvash ҫӱрен (śӱren).
