From Proto-Mongolic *jexeren, commonly derived from Proto-Turkic *yẹgren (“yellow, chestnut”), which is also the source of зээрд (zeerd, “red, chestnut”).
Compare East Yugur jeeren, Western Yugur [script needed] (yiğïr, “gazelle”), Chuvash ҫӱрен (śӱren).
