From Proto-Mongolic *jexergene, cognate with Buryat зээргэнэ (zeergene, “a name of a plant”), Kalmyk зеергне (zeyergne, “blackberry, forest raspberry”), East Yugur jyyrgene (“ephedra”).
Probably equivalent to зээр (zeer, “antelope”) + -гэнэ (-gene).
