Inherited from Proto-Mongolic *nokaï, probably a derivation of Proto-Mongolic *noka with further Para-Mongolic cognates.
Compare Dongxiang nogvei, Daur nogw, Para-Mongolic Khitan [Khitan Small needed] (ńiqo), 捏褐 (niehe), Tungusic Evenki некэ̄ (ņekə̄, “sable”), Jurchen nieha (“puppy, small dog”), Manchu ᠨᡳᠣᡥᡝ (niohe, “wolf”) and maybe Korean 너구리 (neoguri, “raccoon dog”).
