From Old East Slavic сочевица (sočevica), from сочиво (sočivo, “lentil seed”), from Proto-Slavic *sočivo, probably from *sòkъ (“juice”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *sokʷos.
Cognate with Russian чечеви́ца (čečevíca) and Ukrainian сочеви́ця (sočevýcja).
