From Old East Slavic сеѵклъ (seüklŭ), from Ancient Greek σεῦκλον (seûklon), as is Bulgarian цвекло́ (cvekló), Macedonian цвекло (cveklo), Serbo-Croatian ци̏кла / cȉkla, Slovak / Czech cvikla, Polish ćwikła, Hungarian cékla. Hither belongs also the taxonomic Beta vulgaris var. cicla and Arabic سِلْق (silq).
