скудный

Russian

Etymology

Constructed as if from скуда́ (skudá, poverty) + -ный (-nyj). Compare Old East Slavic скудъ (skudŭ), Old Church Slavonic скѫдъ (skǫdŭ). From Proto-Slavic *skǫd-; see also pre-first-palatalization *skęd-, whence щади́ть (ščadítʹ, to spare, to have mercy on). Cognate with Avestan 𐬯𐬗𐬀𐬥𐬛𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬌𐬥𐬙𐬌 (scandaiieinti, they destroy), 𐬯𐬐𐬆𐬥𐬛𐬀 (skənda, broken; illness), Latin scandula (shingles) (also scindula).
