From the noun слух (slux, “hearing”), from Proto-Slavic *sluxъ (“hearing”), originally meaning “what is spoken, what can be heard, rumour”, from *slūti (“to be named, to talk over, to follow news”), influenced by forms such as *směxъ (“laughter”), from *směj- (“to laugh”), *smě- (“to laugh”) and *spěxъ (“hurry”), from *spě-ti (“to hurry”).
