Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *ḱlowsos, from *ḱlew- (to hear). Cognate with Ancient Greek κλέος (kléos, rumor; fame), Sanskrit श्रवस् (śrávas, fame, honor) and Old Irish clú (fame, rumor).

From the same Proto-Indo-Euroepan root also *slava (glory, fame), *slovo (glory, fame) and *slyti (have a reputation).
