Proto-Slavic
Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *ḱléw-(e)-ti, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlew- (“to listen to”); technically equivalent to Proto-Indo-European *ḱel- (“to incline towards”) + *-uti. The root vowel was retracted to -o- in Slavic due to the the following -w- (as in *novъ from Pre-Slavic *néwos). Cognate with Latvian sluvêt (“to become famous”), Ancient Greek κλέω (kléō, “to glorify”), Latin clueō (“to call”).
