Proto-Slavic
Etymology
From earlier *sluxěti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *klauˀš-, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlows-, from *ḱlew-. Baltic cognates include Lithuanian kláusti (“to ask”), klausýti (“to listen”), 3sg. klaũso, Old Prussian klausiton (“to hear”), klausēmai (“I listen”). Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit श्रोषति (śróṣati, “to listen, to obey”), Old Irish clúas (“hearing, ear”), Old High German hlosēn (“to listen”), English listen, English loud, etc. Derksen asserts that the initial *s- (vs. Baltic initial *k-) was adopted from related words with e-grade vocalism, where it would be expected.
