From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śráwas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĉráwas, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱléwos (“fame”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬯𐬭𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀 (srauua, “word”), Ancient Greek κλέος (kléos), Russian сло́во (slóvo).
