Etymology
From Proto-Slavic *stanъ, from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (“to stand, stay”), whence also стати (stati, “to stand”), ставити (staviti, “to set, place”), стояти (stojati, “to stand”), стадо (stado, “herd”) and столъ (stolŭ, “seat, throne”). Cognate with Persian ستان (stân, “-stan”) and Sanskrit स्थान (sthā́na, “abode, dwelling”).
