Traditionally derived from Polish turma, from Middle High German turm, from Old French *turm, from Latin turrem/turrim, accusative singular of turris. But more likely from Proto-Turkic *türmä (“prison”); compare Tatar төрмә (törmä, “prison”), Kyrgyz түрмө (türmö, “prison”).
