From Old East Slavic хытръ (xytrŭ), from Proto-Slavic *xytrъ. Cognate with Bulgarian хитър (hitǎr, “sly”), Serbo-Croatian хитар/hitar (“hasty”), Slovak and Czech chytrý (“clever”).
