Middle Armenian
Etymology
Ačaṙyan derives from մանուկ (manuk, “child”) + -ա- (-a-) + Persian سر (sar, “head”), thus “head of children, school-master, teacher”. For the second element see *սար- (*sar-). For the whole formation Ačaṙyan compares the names Մանկաւագ (Mankawag), Մանկտաւագ (Manktawag).
On the other hand, Nalbandjan considers the name to be wholly an Iranian formation, namely a borrowing from Old Ossetic *Magnasara, from *magnasara (“bare-headed”), the supposed ancestor of Ossetian бӕгъӕ́мсар (bæǧǽmsar); see there for more.
