ագանիմ
Old Armenian
Etymology 1
From Proto-Indo-European. The initial հ- (h-), found in the alternative form հագանիմ (haganim) and in modern Armenian հագնել (hagnel), is old and probably has an etymological value. The Proto-Indo-European root has been variously reconstructed as *h₂ew-, *h₃ew-, *h₃ow-. Cognates include Latin ex-uō (“undress, take off”), ind-uō (“put on, clothe”), Avestan 𐬀𐬊𐬚𐬭𐬀 (aoθra, “shoe”), Lithuanian aũti (“to take off shoes”), Russian обу́ть (obútʹ) and perhaps Hittite [script needed] (unu-, “to adorn, decorate, lay (the table)”). See also առագաստ (aṙagast), օդ (ōd), օթոց (ōtʿocʿ).
