առաւօտ
Old Armenian
Alternative forms
- առաւաւտ (aṙawawt)
Etymology
The original spelling is առաւաւտ (aṙawawt), from առ (aṙ) + Proto-Armenian *aw, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éwsōs (“dawn”), + -աւտ (-awt).
On the other hand, Ałayan derives *aw from Proto-Indo-European *sāu-, the “pure” root of *sāu-el- (“sun”), but as stated by J̌ahukyan and Martirosyan this is improbable, as *sāu- is not attested in any cognate language. See also աւօտ (awōt).
