Etymology

The origin is uncertain.

According to Asatryan, perhaps from Middle Iranian *āwā̆zāk (carrying away), an agent noun from the preverb *ā- + *waz- (to carry), from Proto-Indo-European *weǵʰ-. For the suffix see -ակ (-ak).
