բուծին

Old Armenian

Etymology

From Classical Syriac ܒܘܨܝܢ (bwṣyn /būṣīn/), ܒܘܨܝܢܐ (bwṣynˀ /būṣīnā/, wick, candle; pumpkin, gourd; mullein).[1][2][3] Compare Arabic بُوصِير (būṣīr, mullein). Mullein, also called "candle-wick plant", was used to make wicks: see Verbascum_thapsus#Other_uses.

Ultimately, perhaps of Iranian origin: compare Middle Persian 𐮱𐮵𐮿𐯍𐮲𐮵𐮰 (bwcynʾ /bōzīnʾ/), 𐮱𐮿𐯍𐮲𐮵𐮷 (bcynk /buzīnag/, a kind of cucumber, cintron).[1][2]

Noun

բուծին (bucin)

  1. candle wick
    Synonym: պատրոյգ (patroyg)
    • 5th century, Basil of Caesarea, Homiliae in Hexaemeron , (1830 edition, page 57):
Եւ որ ինչ ծծին և ձգին, ի սպառումն կրթէ հասանէ՝ ըստ օրինակի պատրուկ ճրագի կամ բուծնոյ, որ ծծեն քամեն զիւղն առ ի կերակուր հրոյ։
Ew or inčʿ ccin ew jgin, i spaṙumn krtʿē hasanē, əst ōrinaki patruk čragi kam bucnoy, or ccen kʿamen ziwłn aṙ i kerakur hroy.

Usage notes

The word is a hapax legomenon. The only attestation is in the genitive form բուծնոյ (bucnoy). The nominative բուծին (bucin) is reconstructed from the latter. Theoretically, nominatives *բուծն (*bucn) or *բուծուն (*bucun) are also possible, but the correct one is *բուծին (*bucin) as evidenced by the etymology.[2]
