Old Armenian

Etymology

According to J̌ahukyan, borrowed from Iranian *rax. Compare Sogdian [script needed] (rγʾh), Yagnobi рах (rax). Compare also related dialectal ռեխ (ṙex). J̌ahukyan then asks in a footnote whether these are related to Avestan 𐬯𐬭𐬀𐬑𐬙𐬌 (sraxti, edge, corner), Persian رخ (rux, cheek) from Proto-Indo-European *srakʷ- (sharp-edged), a view taken by Bailey.

Noun

երախ (erax)

  1. mouth (of humans); muzzle (of animals)
