Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂en- (old woman, ancestor). Cognates include Latin anus (old woman), Ancient Greek ἀννίς (annís, grandmother), Lithuanian anyta (mother-in-law), Hittite [script needed] (ḫanna-, grandmother). The by-form հանի (hani) may derive from *h₂en-ih₂ equivalent to Proto-Indo-European *h₂en- with the feminine suffix *-ih₂.

The word may have also had the meaning of “male ancestor” in Proto-Armenian: compare the Georgian borrowing ჰანი (hani, male or female ancestor).
