From Proto-Indo-European *h₂eh₃-mo- or *h₃eH-mo-. Cognate with Ancient Greek ὠμός (ōmós), Sanskrit आम (āmá), Baluchi هامگ (hāmag), Pashto اوم (um) and Old Irish om.
