The original spelling is հաւրան (hawran), from *հաւր- (*hawr-, shepherd), from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂-tro- (guarder, protecter, keeper), from *peh₂- (to protect), + -ան (-an, collective suffix). Compare also Middle Armenian պահրան (pahran).
