մէգ
Old Armenian
Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *h₃meygʰ-o- or *h₃meygʰ-eh₂-, from *h₃meygʰ- (“fog, cloud”). A borrowing from the Iranian cognates is formally possible (compare Parthian 𐫖𐫏𐫃 (myg /mēγ/)), but according to Martirosyan the existence of dialectal մգլել (mglel, “to cloud”), in view of its internal -l-, that is reminiscent of the Greek and Balto-Slavic forms, favours the native origin.
