According to Ačaṙyan, from earlier *պուղց (*pułcʿ), inherited from Proto-Indo-European *bul-sḱ-, extended from the root *bul- (to swell); among the cognates he compares especially Sanskrit बुलि (buli, the female organ of generation; the anus), Lithuanian bulìs (buttock). Related to պղպջակ (płpǰak), պլլիկ (pllik).
