ջառջառ

Armenian

Alternative forms

  • ջարջառ (ǰarǰaṙ), ջյառջյառ (ǰyaṙǰyaṙ), ջարջար (ǰarǰar)
  • ճառճառ (čaṙčaṙ) Western Armenian orthography

Etymology

From Arabic جَرْجَر (jarjar), in various dialects mediated by various descendants of the same. Bdoyan derives from ճռճռալ (čṙčṙal, to creak), because of the sound that it makes during operation,[1] but this is a folk etymology. Note that the spelling ճառճառ (čaṙčaṙ) reflects Western Armenian orthography, i.e. ճ (č) = [d͡ʒ].

Pronunciation

  • (Eastern Armenian, standard) IPA(key): [d͡ʒɑrˈd͡ʒɑr]
  • (file)

Noun

ջառջառ (ǰaṙǰaṙ)

  1. (dialectal) thresher, threshing sledge, an implement of wood in which there are revolving axles dragged along by beasts for crushing the corn
    Synonyms: կամ (kam), կամնասայլ (kamnasayl)

Usage notes

Denotes a more advanced implement than կամ (kam).
