Most likely a loan word from Akkadian 𒄀𒁍 (GI.GID2, GI.BU /embūbu, enbūbu, ebbūbu/, “flute”), which probably derived from base "n-b-b" (to be hollow). Compare Arabic أُنْبُوب (ʾunbūb, “pipe, tube”). [1]
