From a diminutive of Old High German magad (“maiden”) (compare German Mädel), from Proto-Germanic *magaþs, from Proto-Indo-European *magh(u)- (“young person”). Synchronically, מויד (moyd, “maiden, lass; maid”) + ־ל (-l).
