Etymology

Borrowed from Ge'ez አፈው (ʾäfäw, “scent, fragrance”), pl. አፈዋት (ʾäfäwat), if not from Old South Arabian. But also with parallels in Cushitic. The singular فُوه‎ (fūh) is back-formed and possibly invented by medieval dictionary authors to place the word under a “root”. Doublet of فَوْعَة‎ (fawʿa), فَوْح‎ (fawḥ), فَوْخ‎ (fawḵ).
