From Middle Persian or Parthian *ābrēq possibly via Classical Syriac ܐܖܪܝܩܐ (ʾaḇrēqā), attested as Classical Persian آبریز (âbrēz) from آب (âb, “water”) + the present stem of the verb ریختن (rêxtan, “to pour”).
