Of uncertain etymology, but probably from Sanskrit चीन (cīna, “China”), itself usually derived from Old Chinese 秦 (*Dzin, “Qin”). It's one of the Arabic country names which require the definite article اَل‎ (al-). See “Names of China” at Wikipedia.
