- From Classical Syriac ܩܪܝܢܐ (qeryānā, “reading; holy scripture”).
- From the root ق ر ء (q-r-ʾ), from قِرَاءَة (qirāʾa, “reading, recitation”), from قَرَأَ (qaraʾa, “to declaim, to recite”).
