Relative adjective (nisba) composed of بَرْبَر (barbar, “Berbers”) + ـِيّ (-iyy), probably from Ancient Greek βάρβαρος (bárbaros, “non-Greek, foreign, barbarian”), apparently imitative of foreign speech.
