Verb
تَبِعْ • (tabiʿ) (form I)
North Levantine Arabic
Etymology
From Arabic تَبَع (tabaʿ). The feminine form apparently from Arabic تَبَعِيّ (tabaʿiyy).
Pronoun
تبع (tabaʿ) (feminine تبعيت (tabʿīt))
- forms possessive pronouns of all persons with the respective personal suffixes
- هالتنوره تبعيتي
- Ha-t-tannūra tabʿītī.
- This skirt is mine.
- used appositively after a noun instead of an ordinary possessive or iḍāfa construction
- هيدي التنوره تبعيت إمي
- Haydī t-tannūra tabʿīt ʾimmī.
- This is my mother’s skirt.
- هيدا الكمبيوتر تبعنا
- Haydā l-kumpyūtar tabaʿnā.
- This is our computer.
Usage notes
- The latter construction is particularly common with foreign nouns, as in the example, or with proper nouns. The reason is that adding personal suffixes to these, though perfectly possible, may sound awkward.
