Etymology 1

Unknown, a culture-word interrelated with Persian جوراب (jôrâb, sock) with a disputed direction of borrowings. Cognate to Aramaic גְּרַב (gəraḇ), גַּרְבָּא (garbā), Classical Syriac ܓܪܳܒܳܐ (gərāḇā, skin bottle), Late Babylonian 𒄖𒊏𒁍 (/gurābu/, bag; bag around a jug), Ge'ez ግራብ (gərab, skin bottle), Amharic ጊርባ (girba, container for water or honey made from skin). Arabic has the word in other shapes قِرْبَة (qirba) and قِرَاب (qirāb); see also جَوْرَب (jawrab).
