Borrowed from Arabic حِنَّاء (ḥinnāʾ), from Middle Persian [Term?] (/*hannāyēd/, “to smear, anoint”) (compare Middle Persian 𐫀𐫗𐫇𐫅𐫃 (ʾnwdg /annōdag/, “the anointed one, Messiah”), whence Persian اندودن (andudan)).
