From the root خ ر ف (ḵ-r-f) meaning "to gather produce", "to become ripe or attaining fullness". ِCognate with Hebrew חֹורֶף (khóref), Sabaean and Qatabanian Old South Arabian 𐩭𐩧𐩰 (ḫrf), Mehri [script needed] (ḫarf), Shehri [script needed] (ḫorf), Soqotri [script needed] (ḥorf), Harsusi [script needed] (ḫōref), Ge'ez ኀሪፍ (ḫärif).
