Etymology 2
- From the root س ن و (s-n-w) meaning "to be splendid or bright", "to be more intense in color"; as the flower is often mixed with حِنَّاء (ḥinnāʾ, “henna”) to strengthen its shade; compare cognates Hebrew שָׁנִי (shaní, “scarlet, crimson”), Ugaritic 𐎘𐎐 (ṯn, “dyed scarlet”), Akkadian 𒅆𒉌𒌈 (šinītum, “dyeing a textile”).
- From Proto-Semitic *šinn- (“tooth”) originally applied to thorn-bushes, but more generally to any bush or bramble; compare Classical Syriac ܣܢܝܐ and Hebrew סנה.
