شهرستان
Persian
Etymology
From Middle Persian štr'stʾn' (*šahrestān, “province; capital, city”), Manichaean Middle Persian šhrystʾn (šahrestān, “province; provincial capital, city”). Synchronically can be analyzed as شهر (šahr, “city”) + ـستان (-stân). Akin to Old Armenian շահաստան (šahastan), an Iranian borrowing.
