From Middle Persian 𐭥𐭮𐭢𐭣𐭤 (namāč, namāz, reverence, prostration, prayer) / 𐬥𐬀𐬨𐬁𐬰 (namāz), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *námas (to bow, prostrate), from Proto-Indo-European *némos ((place of) sacrifice, worship). Compare Sanskrit नमस् (namas), Ancient Greek νέμος (némos), Latin nemus.
