Borrowed from Persian نماز‎ (namâz) from Middle Persian 𐭥𐭮𐭢𐭣𐭤‎ (namāč, namāz, “reverence, prostration, prayer”) / 𐬥𐬀𐬨𐬁𐬰‎ (namāz), from the Proto-Indo-Iranian root *namas- (“to bow, prostrate”). Compare Sanskrit नमस् (namas).
