From Kurdish neynûk, from Proto-Iranian *HnagnuHakaH, a derivative of *Hnā́xš (compare Persian ناخن (nâxon), Baluchi ناہن (náhun), ناکن (nákun)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hnā́kš (compare Sanskrit नख (nakha)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃nṓgʰs (compare Old Armenian եղունգն (ełungn), Lithuanian nãgas, Old Church Slavonic нога (noga), Ancient Greek ὄνυξ (ónux), Latin unguis, Old Irish ingen, Old English næġl).
