From Akkadian 𒌋𒀜 (kīru), from Sumerian 𒌋𒀜 (gir, “oven, kiln”). Compare Armenian կիր (kir), Hebrew גר (gīr, “lime”), Aramaic ܓܝܪ, גיר (gīr), Arabic جير (ǧīr).
