From Akkadian 𒂊𒄈𒌅 (egirtu, “inscribed tablet; oracle of fate, ambiguous wording; contract, bound deal”), possibly via Old Persian 𐎠𐎥𐎼𐎠 (*angarā, “missive, letter”). Compare Hebrew אִגֶּרֶת (ʾiggereṯ).
