From Ancient Greek ὕσσωπος (hússōpos), itself from some Semitic source; compare Akkadian 𒍪𒌑𒁍 (/zūpu/), Arabic زُوفَا (zūfā), زُوفَى (zūfā), Hebrew אֵזוֹב (ʾēzôḇ).
